Another great Honey Festival

Thank you to all our visitors, sponsors, volunteers, stallholders and friends in the Ashford Heritage Centre and Parish

The ABKA Annual Honey Festival defied the forecast for rain on Saturday, 20th September, as crowds flocked to the Heritage Centre and Parish Grounds from 11 a.m. onwards.

Within the first hour, children had their faces painted, tackled the bee quiz, and gathered around the ever-popular observation hives. Families filled the Centre to admire the colourful art and poetry created by local Wicklow schoolchildren, whose teachers had once again inspired enthusiastic entries.

The honey-tasting table was busy throughout the day, with children proving themselves expert tasters!  Sales of spring, summer and heather honey  were brisk, as young gourmands urged their families to buy their favourites!

This year’s Festival featured a wider range of artisan stalls than ever, all reporting strong business. ABKA beekeepers hosted their own table, selling members’ beeswax candles, salves, lotions and other handmade products. Volunteers—working together like the bees they care for—were central to the Festival’s success.

The day also carried a special poignancy, following the passing of beekeeper and friend Paddy MacCauley, in June. In his memory, the MacCauley family generously sponsored the Festival food, recalling Paddy’s love of camaraderie, community and craic. His friend Alan the Fishman was on hand with his popular fish and chips, while popcorn and ice cream stalls kept families happy. Though Paddy is sorely missed, his spirit lived on in the food, friendship and fun he so cherished.

Throughout the day, visitors also enjoyed live music and an engaging talk on the fascinating journey of honey “from the flower to the pot.” The Festival concluded with the prize-giving ceremony for the children’s Art and Poetry competitions, followed by the eagerly awaited raffle draw.
